Christmas can be a challenging time of year when it comes to avoiding alcohol. With the increasing number of social events to attend it can be really difficult to know what to drink, or what to suggest instead. With that in mind, we’ve put together this list of non-alcoholic Christmas drink ideas that won’t make you feel like you’re missing out.
An alternative to spiced apple cider, this comforting hot drink can be made by simmering apple juice with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and an orange cut into slices until fragrant. Add a small splash of vanilla just before serving to create the ideal accompaniment to outdoor carols or Christmas market wandering.
This refreshing drink is made by mixing cranberry juice and sparkling water with a dash of lemon juice. Perfect for parties, serve it over ice with a sprig of fresh mint for the best effect. You could also substitute the lemon juice for lime for a hint of extra zing.
The epitome of Christmas beverages, traditionally, mulled wine is made using red wine, but you can absolutely substitute that for red grape juice instead. Simmer the juice in a saucepan with cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange slices to infuse it with those warm spice flavours.
If fruity drinks are your thing, then you’ll love this one. Mix some fruit juices of your choice such as pineapple and mango with sparkling water and a splash of lemon juice. Serve it over ice, and garnish with fresh fruit for a party vibe. To make it even more special, you could put some Grenadine in the bottom of the glass before pouring the juice in slowly to make it look like a fabulous sunset.
For something a little different to the norm, this hot drink is made using hot water, honey, lemon juice and frozen raspberries. Simply mix them together and heat gently then strain, and serve with a sprinkling of ground cinnamon on top for that little hint of Christmas.
If you like curling up on the sofa with a glass of something Christmassy, then this recipe on the BBC Good Food website might be right up your street. Combining double cream, evaporated milk, maple syrup, coffee and vanilla extract can make a gorgeous alternative for an indulgent festive beverage.
